Every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, but no one can tame the tongue—a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

Colombian leaders announced a new peace deal in Havana on Friday, which they hope will answer voters’ rejection of the previous one, which sought to end a 52-year-long civil war with FARC rebels. Some voters said the previous agreement was too lenient with the rebels, giving them amnesty and automatic seats in Parliament – but it was also undermined by anti-Gay Roman Catholics and Pentecostals seeking to topple the government. O LORD, I have heard of your renown, and I stand in awe, O LORD, of your work. In our own time revive it; in our own time make it known; in wrath may you remember mercy.

God came from Teman, the Holy One from Mount Paran. His glory covered the heavens, and the earth was full of his praise. The brightness was like the sun; rays came forth from his hand, where his power lay hidden. Before him went pestilence, and plague followed close behind. He stopped and shook the earth; he looked and made the nations tremble. The eternal mountains were shattered; along his ancient pathways the everlasting hills sank low. I saw the tents of Cushan under affliction; the tent-curtains of the land of Midian trembled. Was your wrath against the rivers, O LORD? Or your anger against the rivers, or your rage against the sea, when you drove your horses, your chariots to victory? You brandished your naked bow, sated were the arrows at your command. Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. For all of us make many mistakes. Anyone who makes no mistakes in speaking is perfect, able to keep the whole body in check with a bridle. If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we guide their whole bodies. Or look at ships: though they are so large that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great exploits.

How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature, and is itself set on fire by hell. For every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, but no one can tame the tongue—a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and brackish water? Can a fig tree, my brothers and sisters, yield olives, or a grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh.

If another disciple sins, you must rebuke the offender, and if there is repentance, you must forgive. And if the same person sins against you seven times a day, and turns back to you seven times and says, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive.”

The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” The Lord replied, “If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.

“Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Come here at once and take your place at the table’? Would you not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink’? Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, ‘We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!'”

Francis Asbury, an English-born, circuit-riding preacher, was the only Methodist minister to remain in the 13 colonies when the War of Independence broke out in 1776. Later he became the first Methodist bishop in the U.S.A.

Holy God, you inspired Francis Asbury and George Whitefield with evangelical zeal through their faithful proclamation of the Gospel: Inspire us, we pray, by your Holy Spirit, that we, like them, may be eager to share your Good News and lead many to Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. No photo is available of Specialist Ronald L. Murray Jr., who was killed in a non-combat incident in Kuwait last Thursday. He was deployed in fire support as part of the battle against the Islamic State and was killed in a vehicle accident. “He was an outstanding soldier with an infectious smile, and sense of humor that would brighten any room,” Col. Robert E. Lee Magee, commander of 3rd Brigade Combat Team, said in a statement.

Sgt. John W. Perry enlisted in 2008 as a test, measurement and diagnostic equipment maintenance support specialist. He deployed to Afghanistan from August 2010 to July 2011 before deploying again in September of this year.

Pfc. Tyler Iubelt, a motor transport operator, enlisted less than a year ago, on Nov. 23, 2015. His awards and decorations include the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with campaign star, Army Service Ribbon and Combat Action Badge.
