Let us now sing the praises of famous men,
our ancestors in their generations.

Pope Francis visited Malmos, Sweden a few days ago to encourage reconciliation between Rome and World Lutheranism, kicking off a year of activities leading to the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s nailing “95 Theses” to the church door in Wittenburg and the beginning of the Protestant Reform. But the pope made much more news during an airborne news conference on his way home, in which he asserted that the Roman Church will never ordain women priests because John Paul II said not to – a stance likely to make more Protestants over time. Pope Francis visited Malmo, Sweden a few days ago to encourage reconciliation between Rome and World Lutheranism, kicking off a year of activities leading to the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s nailing “95 Theses” to the church door in Wittenburg and the beginning of the Protestant Reform. The pope praised the Reform for increasing the Vatican’s use of Scripture, and shared the stage with the Primate of Sweden and Archbishop of Uppsala, Antje Jackelén, a woman. Then on the way home the pope told an airborne news conference that the Roman Church will never ordain women priests, supposedly because John Paul II said not to. So what was the point of the visit? The Lord is in the holy temple; let all the earth keep silence. Habakkuk 2:20

INVITATORY AND PSALTER

Lord, open our lips.
And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.

Psalm 95:1-7
Venite

Come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before God’s presence with thanksgiving;
and raise to the Lord a shout with psalms.
For you are a great God;
you are great above all gods.
In your hand are the caverns of the earth;
and the heights of the hills are yours also.
The sea is yours, for you made it,
and your hands have molded the dry land.
Come, let us bow down and bend the knee,
and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For you are our God,
and we are the people of your pasture, and the sheep of your hand.
Oh, that today we would hearken to your voice!

Psalm 71

1  In you, O LORD, have I taken refuge; *
let me never be ashamed.
2  In your righteousness, deliver me and set me free; *
incline your ear to me and save me.
3  Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe; *
you are my crag and my stronghold.
4  Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked, *
from the clutches of the evildoer and the oppressor.
5  For you are my hope, O Lord GOD, *
my confidence since I was young.
6  I have been sustained by you ever since I was born;
from my mother’s womb you have been my strength; *
my praise shall be always of you.
7  I have become a portent to many; *
but you are my refuge and my strength.
8  Let my mouth be full of your praise *
and your glory all the day long.
9  Do not cast me off in my old age; *
forsake me not when my strength fails.
10  For my enemies are talking against me, *
and those who lie in wait for my life take counsel together.
11  They say that God has forsaken me,
that they will come after me and seize me; *
because there is none who will save.
12  O God, be not far from me; *
come quickly to help me, O my God.
13  Let those who set themselves against me be put to shame and be disgraced; *
let those who seek to do me evil be covered with scorn and reproach.
14  But I shall always wait in patience, *
and shall praise you more and more.
15  My mouth shall recount your mighty acts
and saving deeds all day long; *
though I cannot know the number of them.
16  I will begin with the mighty works of the Lord GOD; *
I will recall your righteousness, yours alone.
17  O God, you have taught me since I was young, *
and to this day I tell of your wonderful works.

18  And now that I am old and gray-headed, O God, do not forsake me, *
till I make known your strength to this generation
and your power to all who are to come.
19  Your righteousness, O God, reaches to the heavens; *
you have done great things;
who is like you, O God?
20  You have showed me great troubles and adversities, *
but you will restore my life
and bring me up again from the deep places of the earth.
21  You strengthen me more and more; *
you enfold and comfort me.
22  Therefore I will praise you upon the lyre for your faithfulness, O my God; *
I will sing to you with the harp, O Holy One of Israel.
23  My lips will sing with joy when I play to you, *
and so will my soul, which you have redeemed.
24  My tongue will proclaim your righteousness all day long, *
for they are ashamed and disgraced who sought to do me harm.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

THE LESSONS
Ecclesiasticus 44:1-15 (NRSV)

Let us now sing the praises of famous men,
our ancestors in their generations.
The Lord apportioned to them great glory,
his majesty from the beginning.
There were those who ruled in their kingdoms,
and made a name for themselves by their valor;
those who gave counsel because they were intelligent;
those who spoke in prophetic oracles;
those who led the people by their counsels
and by their knowledge of the people’s lore;
they were wise in their words of instruction;
those who composed musical tunes,
or put verses in writing;
rich men endowed with resources,
living peacefully in their homes —
all these were honored in their generations,
and were the pride of their times.
Some of them have left behind a name,
so that others declare their praise.
But of others there is no memory;
they have perished as though they had never existed;
they have become as though they had never been born,
they and their children after them.
But these also were godly men,
whose righteous deeds have not been forgotten;
their wealth will remain with their descendants,
and their inheritance with their children’s children.
Their descendants stand by the covenants;
their children also, for their sake.
Their offspring will continue forever,
and their glory will never be blotted out.
Their bodies are buried in peace,
but their name lives on generation after generation.
The assembly declares their wisdom,
and the congregation proclaims their praise.

Canticle: A Song of Wisdom
Wisdom 10:15-19,20b-21

Wisdom freed from a nation of oppressors *
a holy people and a blameless race.
She entered the soul of a servant of the Lord, *
withstood dread rulers with wonders and signs.
To the saints she gave the reward of their labors, *
and led them by a marvelous way;
She was their shelter by day *
and a blaze of stars by night.
She brought them across the Red Sea, *
she led them through mighty waters;
But their enemies she swallowed in the waves *
and spewed them out from the depths of the abyss.
And then, Lord, the righteous sang hymns to your Name, *
and praised with one voice your protecting hand;
For Wisdom opened the mouths of the mute, *
and gave speech to the tongues of a new-born people.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Ted Larson: The Plague of Hail

Ted Larson: The Plague of Hail

Revelation 16:12-21 (NRSV)

The sixth angel poured his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up in order to prepare the way for the kings from the east. And I saw three foul spirits like frogs coming from the mouth of the dragon, from the mouth of the beast, and from the mouth of the false prophet. These are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty. (“See, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake and is clothed, not going about naked and exposed to shame.”) And they assembled them at the place that in Hebrew is called Harmagedon.

The seventh angel poured his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple, from the throne, saying, “It is done!” And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, and a violent earthquake, such as had not occurred since people were upon the earth, so violent was that earthquake. The great city was split into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. God remembered great Babylon and gave her the wine-cup of the fury of his wrath. And every island fled away, and no mountains were to be found; and huge hailstones, each weighing about a hundred pounds, dropped from heaven on people, until they cursed God for the plague of the hail, so fearful was that plague.

Canticle: A Song of True Motherhood
by Julian of Norwich

God chose to be our mother in all things *
and so made the foundation of his work,
most humbly and most pure, in the Virgin’s womb.
God, the perfect wisdom of all, *
arrayed himself in this humble place.
Christ came in our poor flesh *
to share a mother’s care.
Our mothers bear us for pain and for death; *
our true mother, Jesus, bears us for joy and endless life.
Christ carried us within him in love and travail, *
until the full time of his passion.
And when all was completed and he had carried us so for joy, *
still all this could not satisfy the power of his wonderful love.
All that we owe is redeemed in truly loving God, *
for the love of Christ works in us;
Christ is the one whom we love.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Luke 13:18-30 (NRSV)

Jesus said therefore, “What is the kingdom of God like? And to what should I compare it? It is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in the garden; it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches.” And again he said, “To what should I compare the kingdom of God? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.” Jesus went through one town and village after another, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem.

Someone asked him, “Lord, will only a few be saved?” He said to them, “Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able. When once the owner of the house has got up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us,’ then in reply he will say to you, ‘I do not know where you come from.’ Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’ But he will say, ‘I do not know where you come from; go away from me, all you evildoers!’ There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrown out. Then people will come from east and west, from north and south, and will eat in the kingdom of God. Indeed, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Richard Hooker statue at Exeter Cathedral, England. He is best known for comparing his theology to a “three-legged stool” of Scripture, Tradition and Reason. Protestants often emphasize the authority of Scripture exclusively, while Romanism has stressed the tradition of “what the church has taught for a long time.” But including logic or reason in our understanding of God enables Anglicans to embrace science, ongoing revelation and cultural development in our apprehension of justice and mercy. Collect of the Day: Richard Hooker, Priest, 1600

O God of truth and peace, you raised up your servant Richard Hooker in a day of bitter controversy to defend with sound reasoning and great charity the catholic and reformed religion: Grant that we may maintain that middle way, not as a compromise for the sake of peace, but as a comprehension for the sake of truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

For the United States Congress

O God, the fountain of wisdom, whose will is good and gracious, and whose law is truth: We beseech you so to guide and bless our Senators and Representatives in Congress, that they may enact such laws as please you, to the glory of your Name and the welfare of this people; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Collect for Guidance

Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

  1. Todays commentary about Francis- “so what was the point of his visit?”
    Josh- the fact that they could meet as they did is the point. The Body of Christ needs to be big enough to support these differences. Indeed, if we ever hope to see change in the perspective of the large majority of the world who sees these issues differently than we do, this is the only way it will happen. Please consider the possibility this is evidence of “glass half full” rather than the contrary.

  2. Thank you, Michael. I do not think it’s progress for a pope to go to Sweden, meet with a female archbishop, and then give a news conference on his way home saying “We’re never going to have women priests,” blaming it on a previous pope whose pronouncement was not authoritative. That is not progress of any kind; it’s an insult to women, Swedes and Lutherans of all nations. I didn’t hear the pope talking about glasses empty or full, did you? This is the same Church that openly poached Anglicans to take advantage of our anti-Gay schism ten years ago. Today the Vatican remains the world’s leading source of homophobic oppression; its bishops intervene all over the world to deny legal rights to LGBTs.

    I do not desire reunion with the Roman patriarchy under these circumstances. We need to be a witness against it, with a prayer that 500 years from now, when a pope finally decides to admit the truth, he ordains women priests. Either the Holy Spirit is telling the Church to do this, as we believe, or the Spirit is not – in which case reuniting with us would be disobedience. After all, it took this guy five centuries to admit the Reformers were right about the authority of Scripture – but he didn’t really change a thing, and instead insulted women, Lutherans and all Protestants on his way out the door.

    Galileo was right the first time, but Rome waited almost 500 years to apologize. I don’t care whether they ever catch up; I don’t believe they ever will, precisely because of their polity. Popes can’t claim to be God’s spokesman and then get his message wrong; it defies Reason.
