Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.
In many countries, All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day are treated like a single holiday. In Guatemala, the Indian villagers of Todos Santos (which means All Saints) stretch these celebrations honoring the dead into a three-day-long affair by adding October 31. Families pay homage to the dead on All Souls’ Day by decorating the graves of their loved ones and offering flowers, corn, squash, and orange slices at church. Plus these giant kites! I, Ezra, saw on Mount Zion a crowd too large to count, all singing hymns of praise to the Lord. In the middle stood a very tall young man, taller than all the rest, who was setting a crown on the head of each one of them; he stood out above them all. I was enthralled at the sight, and asked the angel, “Sir, who are these?” He replied, “They are those who have laid aside their mortal dress and put on the immortal, those who acknowledged the name of God. Now they are being given crowns and palms.” And I asked again, “Who is the young man setting crowns on their heads and giving them palms?”, and the angel replied, “He is the Son of God, whom they acknowledged in this mortal life.” I began to praise those who had stood so valiantly for the Lord’s name. And what more should I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets—who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Others were tortured, refusing to accept release, in order to obtain a better resurrection. Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. Master Sgt. Richard A. Pittman, second from left, has died, the U.S. Medal of Honor winner who saved his platoon when it was ambushed along a jungle trail in Vietnam, defying “a withering hail of enemy mortar and small-arms fire.” He attacked with a machine gun, then a submachine gun and a pistol; when he ran out of ammunition he lobbed a hand grenade, the last thing he had, as the enemy started running away from him. “I just did it,” he said later. “I knew somebody had to do something. Combat was kind of always instinctive for me.” (Associated Press)

Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad.
