The last in our series on U.S. currency reform, adding women and African-Americans whose images are to be placed on dollar-denominated bills, is Lucretia Mott, a Quaker abolitionist and feminist who helped write the Declaration of Sentiments approved by the Seneca Falls (N.Y.) Convention on women’s rights in 1848. Interestingly, Christina Rossetti was ambivalent about women voting, but agreed with Mott on the abolition of slavery. Christina Rossetti, by her brother Dante. Holy Women, Holy Men offers a concise yet sweeping overview of her life and times: 19th century Britain, a period of rapid industrialization, the creation of a new middle class, the abandonment of the countryside, the squalor of urban slums – and cultural, religious and artistic reactions, including nostalgia for the way things were. Dante Rossetti started an artistic movement called the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood; Christina wrote 500 devotional poems on the sacramental things of the earth. Two of her poems have been set to music as Christmas carols: “In the Bleak Midwinter” and “Love Came Down at Christmas.”
