Celebrating Eucharist at the ruins of St. Aelred’s Rievaulx Abbey in the North York Moors National Park, 2015. Aelred developed a unique concept of friendship among his monks, who are generally discouraged in most monastic traditions from forming special attachments. Apparently Aelred’s monks were always chaste, but he seems to have allowed them, and himself, to fall in love, interpreting such relationships as a gift of God like every other form of love.
