Peter Paul Rubens: Massacre of the Innocents. Matthew 2:16 tells us that Herod the Great ordered the slaughter of all boys age 2 and under in the area around Bethlehem, to keep baby Jesus from taking Herod’s throne as King of the Jews. But St. Joseph, warned in a dream, led his wife and child to escape to Egypt on foot. They lived there as refugees until it was safe to return.
