Richard Hooker’s “Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity,” which developed a theology of the Elizabethan Settlement, Anglicanism’s Middle Way between Catholicism and Protestantism. He defended the English Prayer Book against Puritan attacks; though he was something of a Calvinist himself, he weakened Calvin’s doctrine of predestination by analyzing truth-claims three ways: using Scripture, the Protestants’ strong point, Tradition as bequeathed by the Catholic Church, and Reason to mediate between the two. In time this became a consensus position of Anglicanism – though not without a Civil War between extremists on the opposing sides. (Wikipedia)
