The Governor of Alaska, Bill Walker, announced this week that he will accept increased Medicaid funding from the Federal government to extend health care benefits for 45,000 low-income citizens, bucking the trend in more than half of U.S. states where opposition governors have refused the money. He took the initiative, announced at an Indian Health Service clinic, after failing to get approval from the state legislature. He was elected last year as an independent and campaigned on expanding Medicaid as a top priority. Alaska’s defection is a setback to the majority of governors – most of whom claim loudly to be Christians – who would rather let the poor suffer than cooperate with the current administration. If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. Eternal God, we give you thanks for the witness of Bartolomé de las Casas, whose deep love for your people caused him to refuse absolution to those who would not free their Indian slaves. Help us, inspired by his example, to work and pray for the freeing of all enslaved people of our world, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
