StJohnOfDamascus.300

An icon of John of Damascus holding an icon of Christ tells a bit of the saint’s story; he defended iconography against two distinct heresies, one holding that Christ was divine and not human, and the other that all physical matter is evil. Both, he said, rejected the Incarnation. He is also known as a hymnwriter, especially of the Resurrection. (iconographer unknown)
