Seabury was a British Crown loyalist before and during the American Revolution, but when the war was won he supported the new government. It took almost 20 years after the Declaration of Independence and an act by the Scottish Episcopal Church before the U.S. Church finally got its own bishop – and then only because of the Scots. Seabury wasn’t the first choice, either, but he was willing to make the long voyage to Britain. (Smithsonian)
