Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand, Indiana recently leased its former boarding school art space to some local craft brewers, continuing an age-old European tradition. They are about 140 Benedictine Sisters; they operate a bakery but they don’t brew beer.

Israel made a bull-calf at Horeb *
and worshiped a molten image;

and fearful things at the Red Sea.
So God would have destroyed them,

and the LORD punished Moses because of them;

that he spoke rash words with his lips.
They did not destroy the peoples *
as the LORD had commanded them.
They intermingled with the heathen *
and learned their pagan ways,
So that they worshiped their idols, *
which became a snare to them.
They sacrificed their sons *
and their daughters to evil spirits.
They shed innocent blood,
the blood of their sons and daughters, *
which they offered to the idols of Canaan,
and the land was defiled with blood.
Thus they were polluted by their actions *
and went whoring in their evil deeds.
Therefore the wrath of the LORD was kindled against the people *
and God abhorred the chosen inheritance.
God gave them over to the hand of the heathen, *
and those who hated them ruled over them.
Their enemies oppressed them, *

Many a time did God deliver them,

Nevertheless, the LORD saw their distress, *

Jesus also told them a parable: “Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? A disciple is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully qualified will be like the teacher. Why do you see the speck in your neighbor’s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? Or how can you say to your neighbor, ‘Friend, let me take out the speck in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor’s eye.

The good person out of the good treasure of the heart produces good, and the evil person out of evil treasure produces evil; for it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks.
“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I tell you? I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them. That one is like a man building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when a flood arose, the river burst against that house but could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, immediately it fell, and great was the ruin of that house.”

Miles Coverdale was the first to complete a translation into English of the entire Bible; his version of the Psalms was adopted by Cranmer in the Book of Common Prayer. If you know the 1662 or 1928 Books, you’ve read Coverdale’s work.

Tyndale was persecuted by Henry VIII and Cardinal Wolsey, because the Pope considered laypeople incapable of understanding the Bible, so he didn’t want them reading it for themselves. Today the rendering of the Scriptures in languages we understand is the essence of the Great Reform. The Roman Church was correct in its prediction, but ignorance cannot inspire faith.
