Martin Luther was a professor of theology and a former monk whose two central ideas were these: that we are saved by God’s grace, not by good works or buying our way out of God’s judgment; and that the Bible is the only source of authoritative teaching about God. Both claims were interpreted as attacks on the the authority of popes – and the protest movement for reform was born.
