Gregory’s success in converting Armenia was by no means assured; his father had assasinated the previous king years before. Gregory returned from exile to atone for his father’s crime, and the old king’s son, now on the throne himself, threw him in a pit for a dozen years. Later they reconciled; teaching the king how to do that is what led to his conversion. (source unknown)
