Studio of Anthony Van Dyck: William Laud. He’s been honored as a martyr and condemned as an intolerant bigot – a rigid High Churchman in the age of Charles I. The Long Parliament put him to death, but he was honest, devout, compassionate and loyal both to the king and to the unbroken catholic faith. His policies spurred prominent Puritan leaders to emigrate to America to escape him, including Anne Hutchinson (February 5).
