In oppposing the Gnostic heresy, theologian and philosopher Clement of Alexandria, Egypt was arguing for something important: the idea that God saves us in the world, not from the world. Our God is knowable, he said, not removed from the world. Gnosticism is still around, and still claiming to have secret knowledge. (source unknown)
