John Johnson Enmegahbowh, an Ottawa Indian from Canada, is the first recognized Native American priest in the Episcopal Church. He helped train many deacons throughout northern Minnesota and enculturated Christianity in the language and traditions of the Ojibway people. John Johnson Enmegahbowh (“The One Who Stands Before His People”) is the first recognized Native American priest in the Episcopal Church. He learned traditional Midewiwin healing from his grandfather and Christianity from his mother.
