Awer Bul, one of the Lost Boys: The Martyrs of Sudan. In the 19th century British imperialists divided Sudan into the Muslim North and the Christian South, forbidding any Christian missionary work north of an arbitrary line – and polarizing the country by religion. Independence from Britain came in 1956, with decades of civil war soon following. Millions of Christians were killed, displaced or forced into exile. In 2011 a peace treaty made South Sudan independent, but war continues to rage in both. (Juba Cathedral)
