Macrina, born rich, chose to be a poor ascetic, founding one of the first Christian communities anywhere on the family estate in Cappodocia. She greatly influenced her brothers Gregory of Nyssa, Basil the Great, Peter of Sabaste and Naucratios, a famed Christian jurist; three of them became bishops and saints.
