Tikhon’s eventful life took him from a simple Russian village to become Archbishop of the Aleutians and Alaska (later All North America) and finally to Moscow, where he clashed with the Soviets after the Russian Revolution. As Archbishop of Alaska, Tikhon traveled widely in the United States and participated in many ecumenical events. In 1900 he sat on a bishop’s throne at the consecration of the Episcopal Bishop of Fond du Lac and would have helped in the laying-on-of-hands, but TEC’s House of Bishops said no; a great opportunity was thus lost, but within weeks a mere photo of the consecrating bishops wearing copes and miters was enough to cause a national uproar.
