John Veniaminov was a Russian-born Orthodox priest sent by his bishop to found a mission in the Aleutian Islands; travel was so difficult it took him and his family a year just to get there. He spent the rest of his life teaching, preaching, learning languages and translating, till he was finally so beloved he was named Innocent, Apostle of North America. (Library of Congress)
