Masthead of William Lloyd Garrison’s trailblazing abolitionist newspaper The Liberator, which featured numerous essays by Maria Stewart. She was a freeborn African-American writer, speaker and teacher. Garrison published the paper for “the immediate and complete emancipation of all slaves” from 1831 until he could finally shut it down at the end of the Civil War in 1865.
