Leo was a deacon when he was elected pope – though he was known as an able administrator and effective preacher. Several things made Leo great; his most famous exploit was negotiating with barbarians as the Roman Empire stumbled toward collapse. He paid Attila the Hun to go away, but when the Vandals came a few years later all Leo could do was try to minimize the damage. (iconographer unknown)
