Christina Rossetti’s poetic emphasis on the sacramental nature of ordinary things (bread, wine, oil, wine) was influenced by the Oxford Movement’s attempt to restore medieval theology and worship to the Church of England. But she was more than a reactionary; her poems give voice to the 19th Century, not the 16th, and she had confidence in her abilities as a female artist. (source unknown)
