Gregory the Great did not create the Gregorian chanting style, but it did arise from his systematic liturgical reforms – just one of the achievements that earned him the title of Great; he was a master politician and administrator who consolidated papal power against the northern Lombards and the eastern imperial power of Constantinople after the fall of Rome.
