Lottie Moon was a well-educated Southern Baptist teacher when her denomination allowed women to pursue missionary work. At first she was aloof toward the Chinese people, but eventually she fell in love with their culture, moving away from teaching toward evangelizing women. Her work inspired the founding of the Baptist Missionary Union in 1888, which still sponsors an annual Christmas missionary offering in her honor.
