Juan de la Cruz was a Spanish monk recruited by his friend Teresa of Avila to help reform the Carmelite Order. He devoted himself so fully to the search for God “that he reached the peak of the mystical experience,” according to Holy Women, Holy Men, “a complete transformation in God.” This painting by an unknown artist has messages shooting like arrows between the Savior and the saint.
