NPG 521, Richard Baxter

After Robert White, 1670: Richard Baxter. He was a moderate Puritan and a chaplain to Cromwell’s army during the English Civil War; afterward Charles II offered him the See of Hereford, but he was opposed to bishops and refused it, ending his career in the Church of England. Yet his convictions permeate the Puritan-flavored 1662 Prayer Book and his words live on in “Ye holy angels bright.”
