Windows at Old St. Paul’s, Edinburgh, commemorate the Scots’ agreement to consecrate American priest Samuel Seabury as Bishop of Connecticut. They asked for and received a theological concession: his pledge to use their version of the Prayer of Consecration at Holy Communion, restoring the ancient epiclesis, or invocation of the Holy Spirit, omitted by Thomas Cranmer in 1549. The Methodist priest John Wesley also argued for the prayer’s return.
