St. Bede, in his Ecclesiastical History, tells us that Willibrord, an English Benedictine monk, traveled from Northumbria to Rome twice, not as a pilgrim but to seek Pope Sergius I’s blessing to evangelize the pagans in Frisia. He established a monastery and cathedral in Utrecht and became its first bishop. Today he is recognized as the patron saint of the Netherlands. (artist unknown)
