There’s been a fair amount of hoopla about who’s giving what prayers at President-elect Obama’s inauguration, so don’t let this get lost: the Rev. Dr. Sharon Watkins, President and General Minister of the Christian Church-Disciples of Christ, will become the first woman ever to preach at the National Prayer Service Jan. 21, held at the National Cathedral. Billy Graham preached for President Bush’s second term. Dr. Watkins was the first woman chosen to head a mainline U.S. denomination in 2005, a year before Katharine Jefferts Schori was elected Presiding Bishop of TEC. In honor of Ms. Watkins’ selection, we will handle the Creed a little differently today, one time only; see below. The Disciples historically have professed “no Creed but the Bible,” but their mission statement is very similar.
Holy Spirit, let me be aware of your presence and that of countless others as together we pray your Divine Office in love.

A Disciples Affirmation
As members of the Christian Church,
We confess that Jesus is the Christ, the son of the living God, and we proclaim him Lord and Savior of the World.
In Christ’s name and by his grace we accept our mission of witness and service to all people.
We rejoice in God, maker of heaven and earth, and in the covenant of love which binds us to God and one another.
Through baptism into Christ we enter into newness of life and are made one with the whole people of God.

The Apostles’ Creed
