The visit of the wise men to baby Jesus is one of those “nice Bible stories,” but its theological importance can barely be overstated: the Savior of Israel was revealed to non-Jewish kings, or astrologers or wise men; and through them to the entire world. I’m a Gentile; are you? If so, this is your day.
Holy Spirit, let me be aware of your presence and that of countless others, as together we pray your Divine Office in love.
Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. Isaiah 60:3

Psalm 97 speaks for the Godly ones, or, the saints. How reluctant we are today to see that God does select from the hosts of people Godly ones. Jesus, too, does this as well.
Too, the lesson reminds us that “only those written in the Lamb’s book of life” can enter the glory of God.
I was once asked about these and similar passages, “Aren’t these judgemental?” I told my questioner, “Judgement is built right in to Christianity — if you believe you must stand before God.”
Can we hope to be selected?
We already are selected, John. Christ assures us throughout the Gospel of John that whoever believes will have everlasting life. Not “whoever lives a good life” or “whoever avoids sin,” but whoever believes.
“God did not send his Son into the world to be its Judge, but to be its Savior.”
